I miss the Dreamcast

Postby 13ways on Thu Feb 12, 2009 2:38 pm

So on 9/9/99 I bought a gaming system that was destined for failure but also for greatness. This system was called the Sega Dreamcast. I bought it with one of the best looking fighting games to ever come out, Soul Caliber, and was instantly in love the moment I plugged the system in. The beautifully rendered fully 3D backgrounds with the fighters that looked and moved almost lifelike. Followed by a plethora of other games that were just as good. Then towards the end a game that I thought for sure would be the saving grace of the system came out and that game was Phantasy Star universe. It was the first MMO on a console and it was a great entry into the market as well. I played that game for many years, even after the Dreamcast was considered a dead system. When the servers went offline I played it in single player. Then just a couple of years ago after taking my games (that happened to be in the same cd holder as my DVDs) over to a friends place and subsequently forgetting them in my car they were stolen. Now Im not sure if you know this or not but Dreamcast games are very hard to come by. I built up a small collection of games and continued playing my Dreamcast until about 2 years ago when my games got stolen again. I took this as a sign from a higher power that I was not meant to enjoy the entertainment of the gods that is the Dreamcast and threw it away. To this very day I regret that decision and I think I may need to re buy it and try to get my hands on a copy of Phantasy Star online, as elusive as that game may be I must have it if I have a Dreamcast.

from my understanding after killing it off, sega pretty much opensourced all the code to make games for it and basically said 'pirate away we don't care'.

If you were to find a dreamcast, I'm pretty sure you could find a working copy online that you could just burn to a cd and play. :D

Double check first tho, I only vagualy remember reading that somewhere online so I could be wrong. I never had a dreamcast, so the perticulars never stuck.
